The trot back

After having walked along the beach to get to the monument, I decided to Reef it back.  Some interesting finds on that huge expanse.

A pole with handle and a float(?).

This float said it had buoyancy to 20kg:

These ruinss have intrigued me for ages!  Today I finally visited and took a peek.

The building interior (bit draughty!)

There were lots of these too.  I don't know if they're walls, floors or rooves.

There are also these.  I think they might be foundations.

And then there's this pair of buildings: (EDIT: Angus informs me these were once home to an operations room during the RAF stay here)

So that was the walk back.  A nice day had by myself and Madam Doglet who was in bed and fast asleep by 17:30.

The walk there

I took a LOT of photos today.  So instead of overwhelming viewers with a huge post, I'm splitting it over two entries.

Today the weather is truly amazing.  It's t-shirt weather so long as you're on the move, so I went for a nice long (for me) walk to the Dr's monument.  GPS, dog, drink, sunglasses, towel, camera and off we went!  4.78miles later we were home again.

Madam is now conked on her bed and hasn't even noticed it's gone doggy dinner time.

Photos!  To get there I decided to take the scenic route along Crossapol beach.  Trotted down, took off shoes and socks, and got walking.  We met a couple of folks walking a dog and my bare-footedness was commented on as "a person going bare foot; it must be summer!"  The beach was certainly warmer than my last visit in February.

A literal sand bag:

Look at that beach!
 photo CrossapolBeachSunnyt_zpse0033ee8.jpg

I saw these tracks in a few places.  I can only assume a *very* small dog as they only occurred near shoe and larger dog prints.
 photo TinyDog_zps3a01c2a7.jpg

At the far end (from us) of Crossapol beach there is this odd outcropping of concrete:
(EDIT: There used to be a pipe that took the water from the reef to the sea under the arches.  Half right that commenter :) )
 photo RiverOutlet_zpsda491560.jpg

Turns out it's where the stream that runs by the surgery comes out to the sea:
 photo TrickyShot_zpsda348153.jpg

Also at that end there's this patch of land:
 photo DumpingPit_zps081426bf.jpg
It seems to accumulate the wash-ups of the sea.  Good place to find net, rope and plastic.

There's also this little buoy/float garden that I rather like:

Nearly there!

One monument.

What an ideal place to put such a structure; so many gorgeous views.

The Dr's and Dentist's:

EDIT.  Apologies, on further inspection this is the Baptist chapel and
Mans a’ Bhàigh or Clachan Guest House behind it.

So that was the walk there and what a glorious one it was too.  Either tonight or tomorrow I shall post the walk back across the Reef with the little finds I spotted on there.

Of sunshine and GPS

We have sunshine.  Proper, sunny sunshine.  You may throw things at your screen if you wish; they won't hit us.

Today I took the camera with me while I went out for bits and bobs.

A lovely view from the surgery with monument on the left.

Snowy peaks, brrrr

So, what about the GPS?  Well, I have volunteered to go around the island with a GPS and the camera to get photos for the Mobile App (Aka Frasan which is Gaelic for little seeds I believe).

Whilst in Scarinish I was reminded of this wreck, so I nabbed a quick photo more as a reminder I need to spend a day down there exploring.

 photo Wreck_zpsaa76d0ed.jpg

I have been very kindly loaned a Garmin GPS (I'm still working through the manual!) and an iPhone so I can map photos to coordinates.  The Garmin is courtesy of my fantastic Dad and so it had a bit of a trek:

 photo LongJourney_zpsd8d531bd.jpg
It was switched off during transit so it thinks it went in a straight line.  Would be quite interesting if it had been left on but there are rules about that.

It also struggles when it goes indoors:
 photo BitLost_zpsc4b8f733.jpg

But, it works, and it's accurate enough for my purposes.  So this summer I shall be calling on folk who've said "I must take you to..." and saying "How about today?"  But first I plan to see if I can pop into An Iodhlann (got the spelling right first time, woo!) and chat to folk, don't want to tread on any toes!  I also need to put together my kit so it's all in one place rather than spread around the living room.

That's it for now.  Madam Doglet is cooking herself, it's warm enough to have the window open a bit (fresh air at last!) and I may even be able to persuade her into a walk later.

P.S. Apologies to those who have tried to comment and not been able to; I had it set to Blogger members only.  That's changed now, but be warned: I get emails of all comments; so no nasties!

Happy Easter

Alright, I'm a day early; but this weekend's photo competition was "Spring" and what better than spring lambs?  This little gathering are actually 1 week+ old and were being moved off to new grazing so the owner could walk along without tripping over them ;)

 photo ManyLambies_zps4bb1b912.jpg

They were very laid back sheep with their lambs and I was kindly allowed to go closer and get some better shots.
 photo Lambies_zps34aae121.jpg

Alas, lambs are rather camera-shy.
 photo CameraShy_zps0dd445bb.jpg

Today is gloriously sunny but very cold.  The Easterly wind (think I got that right; it's coming from the East anyway  EDIT: sorry, SOUTHERLY wind.  Serves me right for not checking) is flippin' cold, but the views are worth wrapping up for.  Ben Hough was getting some sun on its lower slopes:

My mental map of the island and where things are in relation to each other is improving; but where the island is in relation to that view, not so much.

Alan (he who plans to walk around Wales) has kindly loaned me an old iPhone to play about with the Tiree Mobile App.  I'm also doing my own bit for it, but that's a secret for now (mainly because I might make a right mess of it!)  But I can tell you that the coming months will hopefully see some photos from further afield!

Happy Easter weekend to all.  I need to go feed the dog before she tells me off for being late again.

Oh, and don't forget Brits; the clocks go forward tonight!  So 2 am will be skipped and go straight to 3am.  Jo's going to the dawn service tomorrow, what a rotten time to move the clocks.

Island of sun

Apologies to all those on the mainland, we have stolen the Spring sun.  It does keep trying to snow up here, but the island takes one look at it and laughs.  It has been bitterly cold though and we did have gales last week.

Oh, and we have a new way of measuring the strength of the wind: clothing.  Jo came to see me this morning waving his collar at me and saying something about drying the clothes in strong winds.  I couldn't see the problem, until he pointed out that it was a button down collar.  Yep, the wind had ripped the buttons clean off (thread and all).  Only the buttonholes on the collar and two tiny holes in the shirt confirmed their previous existence.

On the plus side, it's been great weather for laundry and there's the added bonus of gorgeously soft clothes and bedding.

The Isle of Tiree Facebook page shared this amazing image today:
Yep, so sunny we need sunglasses.

Madam Doglet has been sunbathing this week, not that you'd think she appreciates it:

"Hmph"

 photo LeSigh_zps5fa43f12.jpg

There's just no pleasing grumpy old women ;)

The Wednesday crafters started a new class today, one of our members has dared to try and teach us to smock.  "Smocking Baubles" is now my favourite exclamation; it's completely polite yet satisfying to shout.  I'm keeping that for Wednesdays though, far too many things to do by dates.

So, I must run off and do!

Tiree Tech Wave 5

What a weekend!

Tech wave 5 is now over.  Folk have gone home or are headed that way and the island is back to its usual population count.

The weekend itself went wonderfully (at least; I think it did).  The weather was lovely for 4 of 5 days and only a little mizzly for the other.

 photo SunnyRainbow_zps70d518a0.jpg

 photo SunnyDay3_zps8b604c3c.jpg

Lots of folk were in and out.  Bicycles were hired; walks were done.  I believe many photos were taken.  There is even a Flickr group where all are invited to share their photos.

The daffodils were out in full force along the road too.  The ones in our garden are just considering blooming.

 photo Daffodillies_zps37d9374c.jpg

Due to the large number of folk, we took over the auction hall for the weekend as well as the rural centre.  Numbers in each varied; folks mingled a lot and many new contacts were made.  I think it was better than last TTW in that respect.  No one group sat and avoided contact.

I might have enjoyed the "hot chocolate with everything" from the Cobbled Cow one morning.
 photo Techybrekky_zpsa0a7f5ff.jpg

Speaking of food.  I think it is safe to say that techies are hungry folk.  Trays of sarnies, cakes and snacks were laid out, but if you didn't get there in 10 minutes you had slim pickings:
 photo SpeedyLunch_zps3f829670.jpg
There was also a choice of two different soups that only lasted about 20 minutes before the pots were near empty.

Techies also rather enjoy their booze.  This is the recycling I brought home from one evening meal.
 photo GoodTime_zpsdcd17060.jpg

And this is the leftovers from the App Launch on Saturday evening:
 photo Booze_zpsa2870f9d.jpg

I am informed the launch went very well with a fairly even mix of techies and islanders.  Our very own Gromitty drew this fantastic poster of someone using their smartphone and being completely lost.

The touchtable is going well.  It was actually projecting things instead of being truly confused.

One of the Cardiff bunch brought this contraption.  It's the makings of a 3D printer.  I'm not sure if he got any further with it though.
 photo 3DPrinter_zps9d67749a.jpg

So, that's the photos.  I think the island economy got a great boost even if we did all confuse the regulars at the Scarinish on Friday night by filling the bar before enjoying a wonderful dinner.

A good time had by all; plans set in motion and laughs galore.

The next wave is in October.  Keep an eye on the TTW website for booking details.  I imagine it will be around August time as Alan of the beard is off to walk the coastline of Wales next month for 3.5 months.
